Chapter 2 — Building the Impossible

The dream became real in a way I never expected.

It wasn’t the moment I picked a date.

It wasn’t when I announced the project.

It wasn’t when I started planning the route.

It became real in the quiet moments.

The moments when I would look at my phone and anxiously wait for a text or a call that used to come naturally.

The conversations that once filled my days became distant.

The excitement about the project.

The talks about podcasts.

The gear.

The new running clothes.

The training runs we were going to do.

The endless conversations about what was possible.

They slowly disappeared.

And with that silence came a feeling I wasn’t prepared for.

I felt alone.

Isolated.

Confused.

For a while, I didn’t know what to do with those feelings.

So I did what I have always done when life gets difficult.

I worked.

I trained.

I buried myself in the pain.

If there is one thing I know how to do, it is follow a plan.

Suffer.

Refuel.

Recover.

Do it again.

There was comfort in the structure.

The miles didn’t care how I felt.

The training plan didn’t disappear.

The next workout was always waiting.

But behind every workout was a growing realization that this project was becoming much bigger than I ever imagined.

There was the training.

The injuries.

The nutrition.

The gear.

The route planning.

The logistics.

Thirty-plus aid locations.

Remote sections.

Unknown access points.

All the details that had to be solved before I ever took a single step.

And for a while, it felt like it was just me.

Me and a training plan.

Me and a dream.

Me and a mountain of problems that needed solutions.

I thought I was alone.

But I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Because what I didn’t realize at the time was that while one person may start a dream, it takes a community to carry it.

The people who would eventually stand beside me at trailheads.

The people who would drive through the night.

The people who would pace me through storms and darkness.

The people who would sacrifice their own comfort so I could chase something that seemed impossible.

They were already becoming part of the story.

I just didn’t know it yet.
